Book Review/ Reflection

Hi everyone,

Today, I am going to share with you a book called "Holes" and share with you how I rate it and how I feel about the story.

Some basic information about the book.
- written by Louis Sachar
- winner of the 1999 Newbery Medal

Basically, the story is about a teenage boy called Stanley Yelnats who was framed of stealing a shoe of a famous baseball player and was sent to Camp Green Lake. If you think Camp Green Lake, is all beautiful and nice, then you are so wrong. Firstly, there was a lake but that was over a hundred years ago, all that is left is a dry, flat wasteland infested with rattle snakes, scorpions and worst of all yellow-spotted snakes whose bites are far more painful than death. As Stanley enters Camp Green Lake, he finds life there is going is not going to be all that easy.
Stanley is forced to dig a five feet by five feet hole every day. Along the way, he meets many friend that help Stanley along the way. Will Stanley ever escape Camp Green Lake?

The thing that I like about this book is that there is two story going on in a single story.
The first story is about Stanley's life in Camp Green Lake, while the second story is about Katherine Barlow who lived near Camp Green Lake over a hundred years ago and what Katherine did, was similar to what Stanley did.

  Rating: 3.5/5

After seeing what you have written on your blog, I also feel like reading this book. You describe that this is a very good book, which make me feel like reading more. After seeing your post, I know that the main chararcter is a person who won't give up easily. I wish that this person can escape from the place and find his freedom.

Hi, this is Shawn Ang. I have read this book when i was in primary school so i know what you are talking about. Louis Sacher is a great author. However, does anyone know where was his inspiration? This is what Louis Sacher said in an interview.

Where did you get the idea for Holes?

No, I didn't live next door to a juvenile correction facility. Actually, I never start with a full idea of what I'm going to write. I usually just start with a piece of a character and then see what develops. In this case, I didn't start with a character; I started writing about Camp Greenlake and it developed from there. I suppose the initial inspiration for writing about the camp came from the heat of summers in Texas. At the time I began the book, we had just returned from the relative coolness of a vacation in Maine to the Texas summer. Anybody who has ever tried to do yard work in Texas in July can easily imagine Hell to be a place where you are required to dig a hole five feet deep and five feet across day after day under the brutal Texas sun.

This proves that in order in write a good book, one must have a good plot, descriptive phrases etc. I feel that Louis Sachar shows a good example of this and all of us should learn from him.

Please comment on my blog to.
Thanks,
Shawn
